Namibia is an intriguing destination for travellers interested in cultural experiences. The Himba, San, Owambo, Herero, Hambukushu and Damara are just some of the many diverse cultures to be discovered in this beautiful country.
The Himba people are a fascinating group with a rich and complex history. Their unique culture and traditions have been shaped by centuries of interaction with other African tribes as well as European colonisers. As a tribe the Himba are not homogenous and include sub groups like Herero, Kuvale and Tjimba. It is believed that the current Himba in Kaokoland in north-western Namibia were the original Namibian Otjiherero speaking people. The southern groups are today known as the Herero proper and occupy the central parts of Namibia. Today they remain a distinct ethnic group proud of their heritage and determined to preserve their traditional way of life in the face of modernization.
In a fascinating twist, the Herero woman have adopted colonial era dress into their cultural dynamic and unique art form. Their dress resembles a Victorian style gown adorned with a cow horn like headdress. .
